AVIF: great for the web, awkward everywhere else

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) compresses images about 50% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, so websites adopted it quickly. But the rest of the toolchain lags: Photoshop needs plugins, Illustrator won’t open it, and no cutting machine software accepts it.

When an AVIF download needs to become a working design asset, vectorizing it to SVG is usually the smartest path: SVG is accepted everywhere vectors are used, and the conversion removes AVIF’s aggressive compression from the equation entirely.

The two AVIF features that break a trace

AVIF supports 10- and 12-bit colour depth and HDR. Your browser decodes those fine, but the tracer works on the 8-bit RGBA buffer that canvas hands back, so a wide-gamut AVIF is tone-mapped down before tracing even begins. Colours in the SVG can land slightly off the original. For flat brand colours this is invisible; for a graded illustration it is not.

The second is alpha. AVIF stores transparency in a separate alpha plane, and unlike PNG it can pair a lossy colour plane with a lossy alpha plane. Compression noise around the edge of a cut-out then reads as semi-transparent fringe pixels, and the tracer treats that fringe as real geometry – you get a halo of thin shapes around your subject. If the trace comes back with a speckled outline, that fringe is the cause.

  • Fix the halo: re-export the AVIF with lossless alpha, or flatten onto a solid background and trace in B&W mode.
  • Colour looks washed out: convert to 8-bit sRGB PNG first, then trace that.
  • Animated AVIF: only the first frame is decoded – the rest is discarded.
