How to vectorize a logo

  1. Hunt the best source Check email attachments, old websites (the press page often has high-res), letterheads, merch photos. Bigger and cleaner in = better out. Even 400px works; 1000px+ shines.
  2. Pick the mode Single-color marks and lettering → B&W. Multi-color flat logos → Color. Logos with shading → Color at high detail, expect posterization.
  3. Tune against the preview Compare side-by-side. Merged details → raise detail. Noisy speckles → lower it or use B&W. Iterate; it’s instant.
  4. Clean up and export Delete stray shapes and any background in the free editor, optimize, and save your new master SVG somewhere safe this time.

When auto-trace is enough – and when it isn’t

For flat-color logos – which is most logos designed in the last decade – automatic tracing recovers a vector that’s functionally identical to the lost original: same shapes, same colors, infinitely scalable. Print shops accept it, cutters cut it, websites ship it.

Auto-trace hits its limits on: complex gradients (posterized into bands), photographic elements (can’t be vectorized meaningfully), very small/blurry sources (the tracer amplifies ambiguity – see blurry logo rescue), and brand-critical precision (an auto-traced curve is 98% right; a brand manual demands 100%). For that last case, use the auto-trace as a base and have a designer true up the curves – an hour of work instead of a from-scratch redraw.

After vectorizing: the asset kit

  • Save the master SVG in at least two places (the whole problem started with one lost file)
  • Export PNG at 2× and 4× for platforms that reject SVG
  • Generate the favicon ICO
  • Make a single-color variant for embroidery, engraving, and vinyl cutting
