Why vectorizing fixes blur

Blur is uncertainty about where edges are. Tracing commits to an edge and draws it mathematically – the output is sharp even when the input wasn’t.

The blurry-logo rescue sequence

  1. Exhaust the source hunt first Ten minutes of searching beats two hours of restoration: brand press pages, the Wayback Machine for old site versions, social profile images (often uploaded sharp), vendor emails.
  2. Pre-process the best copy Crop tight; boost contrast in any photo app; optionally run an AI upscaler – upscaling alone can’t fix blur, but upscale-then-trace can extract noticeably more.
  3. Trace forgivingly B&W mode, Low–Balanced detail. High detail on a blurry source traces the blur itself. Compare modes; keep the cleanest.
  4. Repair the geometry In the editor: delete noise shapes, straighten edges that should be straight. Lettering tip – identify the original font and retype it via text to SVG rather than rescuing each blurry letter.

Where the rescue line sits

Above roughly 200px with the mark’s shapes still distinguishable: tracing plus cleanup yields a professional result. Between ~100–200px or heavily compressed: expect significant manual repair – viable for simple geometric marks, painful for detailed ones. Below ~100px or smeared beyond recognition: rebuild instead – match the font for the wordmark, redraw the symbol from the blurry copy as reference (any designer can do this faster than restoration; the logo generator covers interim branding).

The good news about lettering: most logo wordmarks use identifiable typefaces. A font-identification search on the blurry sample, then retyping, reproduces that portion perfectly – often the rescue is really “retype the words, trace only the symbol.”
