A designer mid-project should absolutely save .ai. The mistake is treating that working file as the deliverable: the moment artwork leaves Illustrator’s world, SVG (or vector PDF for print) is the format that arrives intact.
Modern .ai files are PDF-compatible internally – which is why renaming tricks half-work – but depending on that is fragile. Export properly: File → Save As → SVG for graphics, PDF for print.

Can I open an AI file without Illustrator?

For the final logo asset, yes – the paths are identical math. The .ai working file matters only during active design in Illustrator.
