Why BMP files still exist – and why to convert them
BMP (Bitmap) is one of the oldest raster formats, created for early Windows. It stores every pixel uncompressed, which made it simple for old software to read but produces enormous files: a 1000×1000 image is about 3 MB regardless of content.
Converting to SVG does two things at once: it shrinks the file dramatically and removes the resolution ceiling. A pixelated 200×200 BMP icon becomes a vector that renders crisply at any size – often looking better than the original ever did.
What BMP tells you about the image you are tracing
BMP is almost always uncompressed, which has one useful consequence: there are no compression artifacts. Every pixel is exactly the value the encoder wrote. Compared with a JPEG of the same picture, a BMP traces noticeably cleaner because the tracer is not chasing ringing and blocking noise around every edge.
The catch is what BMP files usually are. Most in the wild come from Windows Paint, a scanner, or a screen capture, and they carry the artefacts of that origin instead: hard aliased edges with no anti-aliasing, or a scan with paper texture and uneven lighting. Neither is a compression problem, so no amount of re-saving fixes it – the fix is in the tracing settings.
Also worth knowing: the common 24-bit BMP format has no alpha channel at all. Whatever sat behind your subject was flattened into opaque pixels when the file was written. If you need a transparent SVG, the background has to be removed after tracing, not before.
- Aliased Paint-style edges: use B&W mode – the hard edges the tracer needs are already there.
- Scanned artwork: lower the detail setting so paper grain is not traced as thousands of tiny shapes.
- Large files: BMP is uncompressed, so a modest image can be tens of megabytes. Downscale before tracing if the browser stalls.
