Why can’t browsers open TIFF directly?
TIFF is a professional print and archival format that supports exotic features – CMYK color, 16-bit channels, multiple pages, dozens of compression schemes. Web browsers never adopted it because PNG and JPG cover web use cases with far simpler decoding. Since our converter runs entirely in your browser for privacy, it can only trace formats the browser can decode.
The PNG detour costs about thirty seconds and loses nothing: PNG is lossless, so the pixels that reach the tracer are identical to the TIFF original. If your TIFF is multi-page, export the specific page you need as its own PNG.
Tips for scanned TIFF artwork
- For ink drawings and lineart, choose B&W mode when tracing – paper texture disappears
- CMYK TIFFs may shift color slightly when exported to PNG (RGB); that’s normal and rarely matters for tracing
- If the TIFF is enormous (print resolution), don’t worry – the tracer automatically works at an optimal size
