STEP BY STEP

How to make a Cricut SVG from scratch

  1. Start with shapes Pick a base from the catalog – a badge frame, an icon, a geometric mark – and customize its style.
  2. Add your elements Trace hand lettering via sketch to SVG and paste its paths in through the Code tab.
  3. Think in layers One color per layer. Keep shapes bold; remember everything you draw, someone must weed.
  4. Export and cut Download the SVG, upload to Design Space, size, and Make It.

Design rules the blade will thank you for

  • Minimum stroke ≈ 2mm at cut size – thinner tears during weeding
  • Closed paths only – open paths confuse cut order; our export keeps paths closed
  • Counters need bridges in stencils – the middles of O, A, R fall out unless connected (stencil fonts solve this)
  • Test at the real size – a design gorgeous at 10 inches may be unweedable at 3; preview small before committing vinyl

Do I need Cricut Access if I make my own files?

No – Access is a content library subscription. Making and uploading your own SVGs is free in every Design Space plan.

How is this different from designing in Design Space?

Design Space’s design tools are minimal (basic shapes, slice, weld). The Studio gives you a real vector catalog and styling control, and exports a file you own and can reuse anywhere.

Can I make multi-layer designs?

Yes – compose elements per color layer and export. Design Space reads the structure as separate cuttable layers.
