SVG vs PNG for Cricut: Which Should You Use?

What Design Space actually does with each format, when PNG is legitimately the right choice (print-then-cut), and why SVG wins everything else.

Design Space accepts both SVG and PNG, which makes the choice look optional. It isn’t – the two formats take completely different paths through the software, and picking wrong costs you either cut quality or an afternoon.

What happens to each format inside Design Space

Upload an SVG and Design Space reads ready-made vector cut paths. No interpretation, no cleanup screen, layers intact, infinite rescaling. The file is instructions for the blade.

Upload a PNG and Design Space receives a grid of pixels with no inherent outlines. You get the background-removal screen, and then one of two treatments:

  • Print Then Cut: your printer prints the image; the Cricut cuts around its outer edge. The pixels are never cut individually – they’re ink.
  • Auto-trace to cut paths: Design Space infers outlines from pixel edges. The inference is literal – anti-aliased edges become wobbly paths, curves inherit pixel staircase, and scaling a small PNG up means tracing enlarged blur.

That second treatment is where PNG problems live, because a dedicated tracer with controls does the same job far better. (How tracing works.)

When PNG is genuinely correct

Honesty over dogma – PNG earns its place in two Cricut workflows:

  1. Print Then Cut stickers and printables. Full-color artwork, photos, watercolor textures – content that gets printed, then cut around. Pixels are the right representation for printed imagery; a 300 DPI PNG is exactly what this workflow wants.
  2. You only have a PNG and the design is photographic. A photo can’t become meaningful cut layers anyway; Print Then Cut is its destiny.

Everything that gets cut from material – vinyl, HTV, cardstock, layered designs – wants SVG.

The hybrid move: convert before upload

The practically-important case: your design exists as a PNG (downloaded, drawn, photographed) but you want it cut, not printed. Don’t feed it to Design Space’s tracer – run it through a real converter first:

  1. PNG to SVG for Cricut – B&W mode for silhouettes, Color for layers, detail tuned against a live preview (controls Design Space doesn’t give you).
  2. Upload the resulting SVG – smooth paths, proper layers, clean rescaling.

The difference is visible on the cut: script lettering and curved designs come out noticeably smoother from a proper trace than from Design Space’s pixel-following. Two minutes, better project.

Quick answers to the perennial threads

  • “My PNG cut has jagged edges” – that’s traced pixel staircase. Convert to SVG first; see above.
  • “My SVG imported as one piece” – layer structure issue, fixable: SVG layers in Cricut.
  • “Etsy file came with both – which do I upload?” – the SVG for cutting, the PNG for Print Then Cut or sublimation. Sellers include both because they’re for different jobs.
  • “Can Cricut use JPG/GIF/BMP?” – yes, all treated like PNG (raster). WebP, no – convert it.
