Getting a usable capture of paper artwork

Most disappointing drawing traces are decided before the file reaches the converter. A phone photo of a sketchbook carries three problems the tracer cannot separate from your linework: uneven lighting across the page, a slight perspective skew because the camera was not parallel to the paper, and the paper’s own texture and off-white cast.

The tracer looks for boundaries between light and dark. Under a desk lamp, one corner of the page can be darker than the lightest parts of your pencil lines – so it traces the shadow as a shape and drops the faint line entirely. This is why the same drawing can trace beautifully in one photo and produce mush in another.

A flatbed scanner solves all three at once, and for pencil work it is worth the trip. If you are shooting with a phone, shade the page from direct light, hold the camera square to the paper, and raise the contrast before converting so the lines sit clearly darker than the paper.

• Pencil or light ink: go over the final lines with a fineliner before capturing – graphite rarely traces well.
• Shadows traced as shapes: raise contrast until the paper is genuinely white, then use B&W mode.
• Grid or ruled paper: the printed lines will be traced too. Draw on plain paper, or erase the grid digitally first.
