Phone photos welcome (JPG/HEIC-in-Safari). B&W mode turns photos into cuttable silhouettes.
Photo → silhouette
B&W mode reduces a photo to its light/dark boundary – the classic technique behind pet silhouettes, portrait decals, and memorial keepsakes.
Drawing → keepsake
A child’s drawing traced to vector cuts in vinyl for shirts, mugs, and framed art – one of the most-loved Cricut projects there is.
Phone-first workflow
Photograph artwork straight-on in good light and convert on the same device – the converter runs fine in mobile browsers.
STEP BY STEP
How to convert an image to a cut file
- Prep the image Crop to the subject. For photos destined for silhouettes, higher contrast between subject and background = cleaner results.
- Trace in B&W Adjust detail until the silhouette reads clearly. Specks? Lower detail. Lost features? Raise it.
- Clean up if needed Stray shapes can be deleted in our free editor before uploading.
- Upload and cut Into Design Space as usual – Upload → Add to Canvas → size → Make It.
The pet-silhouette recipe (works for people too)
Pick a profile photo with the subject clearly against a lighter background – side profiles read far better as silhouettes than front views. Trace in B&W mode and adjust detail: ears, fur tufts, and whisker bumps are what make a silhouette feel like your pet, so go one detail level higher than feels safe, then clean stray specks in the editor.
Cut it in black vinyl on a light background (or reverse), and you have the gift-shop product people pay $40 for. The same recipe handles portrait silhouettes, couple silhouettes from wedding photos, and house outlines from real-estate shots.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can I turn a photo into a Cricut cut file?
Yes – as a silhouette or posterized design, not a photorealistic image. B&W mode extracts the light/dark boundary, which is what cuts.
How do I cut my child’s drawing in vinyl?
Photograph it flat in bright light, trace in B&W mode (crayon/marker lines work great), clean up stray marks, upload to Design Space. Whole process: ~five minutes.
The trace has tiny specks everywhere – fix?
Lower the detail level (it filters small shapes), or clean the survivors in the editor. Specks come from photo noise and paper texture.
HEIC photos from my iPhone won’t load?
Use Safari (decodes HEIC natively) or set the camera to “Most Compatible” for JPG. Details on the HEIC to SVG page.
